There is no single legal minimum age for hiring a car in South Africa, so the number that applies to you is set by the operator and the vehicle class, commonly falling between 18 and 23, with a requirement that you have held a full licence for a year or two.
Two separate tests are being applied. Age is one. Licence tenure is the other, and it catches people who are old enough but who passed recently.
Both tighten as the vehicle gets more valuable. The small hatchback and the luxury sedan are not governed by the same rule at the same company.
Two tests, not one
Every counter is checking two things:
- Your age, against the minimum for that vehicle class.
- How long you have held a full licence, usually a minimum of one to two years.
A 24 year old who passed three months ago fails the second test at many operators even though the first is comfortable. A 21 year old who has driven since 18 may pass both for an economy car and fail on a luxury class.
Ask about both when you book. Asking only what the minimum age is gets you half an answer.
