Car hire at King Shaka International Airport

King Shaka is a modern, compact terminal, and the rental process reflects that. The counters are in the arrivals hall and the collection bays are in the parking area immediately outside, so a straightforward pickup takes fifteen to thirty minutes.

The airport is busiest around the domestic morning and evening peaks and over the December holidays, when queues do build. Outside those windows it is one of the easier South African airports to collect at.

On return, follow the rental return signs on the airport approach. Because the terminal is small, the walk from the return bays to check in is short, so a 30 minute buffer on top of your usual airport time is generally enough.

King Shaka rates follow the national pattern outside the holidays, and rise sharply inside them because the whole KwaZulu-Natal coast books out in December and at Easter.

A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. Discover Cars puts December at about R474 a day against about R387 in September, so holiday dates cost more.

If you are staying in Umhlanga or Ballito and only need a car for part of the trip, compare a shorter hire plus transfers against a full week. The airport is close enough to both that the maths sometimes favours the shorter hire.

The N2 runs directly past the airport, south to Umhlanga and Durban and north to Ballito, Salt Rock and Zululand. It is a fast, well maintained freeway.

Toll plazas apply on the N2 north of the airport, so keep a bank card or cash in the car. Tolls are billed to you and are not part of your rental rate.

The coast gets heavy summer downpours and visibility drops fast in them. Low lying sections flood, and driving through standing water is the most common way visitors damage a hire car in this province. Slow down and wait it out where you can.

On the N2 south into Durban, the exits for Umhlanga, Umgeni Road and the beachfront come up quickly. Set the navigation before you pull out of the airport.

Zululand and the game reserves north of Richards Bay are the most common longer trip from King Shaka, and the N2 carries you most of the way.

A hatchback covers the coast, the city, the Midlands and the main routes into Zululand, all of which are tarred.

Higher clearance starts to matter on the access roads to some private reserves and coastal camps in the far north of the province, where sand and rough gravel are normal. Sodwana and the iSimangaliso tracks are 4x4 territory and an ordinary rental should not attempt them.

Check the rental agreement's position on unsurfaced roads before you commit to any of that. Most South African agreements restrict gravel and exclude beach driving, and damage there can fall outside the waiver you paid for.
