Car hire in Mthatha

Mthatha Airport is the usual collection point, with counters in the small terminal and quick pickup. There is also a limited town presence.

The fleet here is small, so book ahead rather than arriving and hoping. Demand rises sharply in December when families travel home to the Eastern Cape, and one way vehicles get scarce.

Some visitors prefer to collect in East London or Durban, where the choice is wider, and drive in. That works, but it adds three hours from East London or five and a half from Durban, so it depends on your itinerary.

Coverage for the other brands on this site varies in this part of the Eastern Cape. Check availability for your dates rather than assuming a branch, and consider East London as the fallback if your preferred brand is not available.

Mthatha is a small market with a small fleet, so availability tends to matter more than the headline rate.

These figures come from Discover Cars and Cheapflights. Most are national, not Mthatha quotes. A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. Discover Cars puts December at about R474 a day against about R387 in September, so holiday dates cost more.

December is the tight period here. If you are travelling then, book early and confirm the vehicle group rather than accepting whatever is left at the counter, because the roads out to the coast are not the place for a car you did not want.

• The N2 through the former Transkei is a working road with real hazards. Potholes appear after rain, livestock wander onto the carriageway, and pedestrians walk along and across it near settlements.
• Overtaking on the N2 here requires patience. Slow trucks and long queues are normal and blind rises are common.
• The road out to Coffee Bay is tarred but narrow and often in poor repair, with livestock throughout. Allow an hour and a half for 90 km and do not try to make up time.
• Access roads to many Wild Coast lodges are gravel, sometimes steep, and can wash out after heavy rain.
• Do not drive these roads after dark. Unlit vehicles, animals and pedestrians make night driving here genuinely risky, and locals plan around it.

None of this means you should not come. It means you should plan shorter driving days than the distances suggest and arrive before sunset.

Treat these as minimums. Road works and slow traffic are routine on the N2 here.

A normal car will get you to Mthatha, along the N2 and out to Coffee Bay on the tar, provided you drive to the conditions.

Higher clearance is genuinely worth it if you are staying anywhere reached by gravel, which describes a large share of Wild Coast accommodation. A bakkie is the local answer and there is a reason you see so many of them here.

The rental agreement is the constraint. Most South African agreements restrict or exclude damage on unsurfaced roads, and this is a region where that clause is not theoretical. Ask the rental company directly what your booking permits, and if the answer is that gravel is excluded, plan your accommodation accordingly or arrange a transfer for the last stretch.
