Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA) is the main collection point and is designed around exactly this trip. Counters are in the small terminal, collection is quick and most arriving passengers are driving within half an hour.

There are also branches in Mbombela itself, which serve the local market and work if you are arriving by road.

Because so much of the demand is Kruger self drive, the airport fleet skews towards vehicles with a bit more space and height than you would find at a city branch. Book early in school holidays, when the park and the region fill up.

Coverage for the other brands on this site varies in Mpumalanga. Check availability for your dates rather than assuming a counter exists at the airport or in town.

Nelspruit rates sit close to the national picture, with the usual school holiday and long weekend spikes driven by Kruger demand.

The N4 is the main road through the region and it is a toll road, so keep a card or cash for the plazas. The road to the southern gates is tarred and in reasonable condition.

Inside Kruger, the rules are strict and enforced:

• The speed limit is 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel roads.
• Stay inside your vehicle except at designated camps and picnic sites.
• Gate and camp opening and closing times are fixed and change with the season. Arriving late carries a fine, so plan the day around them.
• The main tarred roads are fine in a sedan. The gravel loops are graded and usually manageable, though they get rough late in the dry season.
• Do not drive at night inside or outside the park if you can help it. Animals on the road are a real hazard on the roads around Kruger too.

The Panorama Route north of Mbombela involves mountain passes such as Long Tom, which are tarred but steep and often misty.

Approximate one way driving times:

Allow more time than the distances suggest on the Panorama Route, because the passes are slow and you will stop constantly.

A sedan or hatchback is entirely capable of Kruger's tarred roads and the main gravel loops. Plenty of people do exactly that every year.

The argument for an SUV or bakkie is visibility. Sitting higher genuinely helps you see over the grass and scrub, which matters when the whole point of the trip is spotting animals. It also gives you more comfort on corrugated gravel.

A 4x4 with low range is not needed for the public roads in Kruger. Where it becomes relevant is private reserve tracks and 4x4 trails, which are not covered by an ordinary rental agreement in any case.

If you are heading on to Eswatini or Mozambique, cross border permission must be arranged in advance and carries a fee. Do not attempt the border without it.
