Car hire in Potchefstroom

Potchefstroom has a modest local rental presence, geared towards residents, students' families and business hire. Fleets are small and weekend hours are limited.

The practical alternative for visitors is OR Tambo, about an hour and three quarters away, where every major brand operates and the choice is far wider.

Demand here spikes around university events, graduations and sports fixtures at the North-West University campus, when local supply gets tight quickly. Book ahead for those weekends.

Potchefstroom is a thin market, which means the national averages are a rough guide at best and local availability matters more than the headline rate.

A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. The N12 links Potchefstroom to Johannesburg in one direction and Klerksdorp in the other. It is a busy road with a mix of freight and farm traffic, and it has stretches of single carriageway where overtaking needs care.

Gauteng's urban e-toll gantries stopped billing in 2024, but the N12 route into Johannesburg does not involve them anyway. Conventional toll plazas do apply on the N1 if you head south towards Bloemfontein.

In town, driving is easy. Traffic is light, streets are wide, and parking is free or cheap almost everywhere including the shopping centres and around the university.

Watch for cyclists and runners. Potchefstroom is a serious training centre for South African athletes and there are far more of them on the roads here than in a comparable town.

The N12 south west towards Kimberley is a long, straight road where fatigue and livestock at dusk are the main risks.

A hatchback is more than enough for the town and the N12.

Farm access roads in the surrounding district are often gravel, which is where a bakkie or higher clearance vehicle earns its place, and also where your rental agreement's unsurfaced road clause becomes relevant. Ask the rental company before you turn off the tar.

If you are driving long distances in the North West, top up fuel in the larger towns rather than relying on the small ones, and keep water in the car in summer.
