Car hire in Vanderbijlpark

Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging both have local rental branches, and they mostly serve business and replacement hire rather than tourism. Hours are weekday focused, with limited Saturday cover and usually nothing on Sunday.

The alternative most visitors use is OR Tambo. It is about an hour and ten minutes away down the R59 or the N1 and R59 combination, the fleet is far deeper, and the pricing is better. If you are flying in, that is almost always the right call.

Local independents also operate in the area alongside the national brands, which is worth knowing if the nationals are sold out for your dates.

Coverage for the other brands on this site varies in the Vaal, and several serve the area from Johannesburg instead. Check availability for your dates rather than assuming a nearby branch, and treat OR Tambo as the fallback.

The Vaal is a small rental market, so quotes here reflect limited local supply rather than the competition you get in Johannesburg.

These figures come from Discover Cars and Cheapflights. Most are national, not Vanderbijlpark quotes. A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. Discover Cars puts December at about R474 a day against about R387 in September, so holiday dates cost more.

If a local quote looks high, price the same dates at OR Tambo. An hour of driving often saves more than it costs on a hire of several days or longer.

The R59 links Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark to Johannesburg and is the main route north. The N1 runs to the west of the area towards Bloemfontein, and the R42 and R57 connect the towns locally.

Gauteng's urban e-toll gantries stopped billing in 2024, so the freeways are not tolled. The N1 south towards Bloemfontein does have conventional toll plazas, so keep a card or cash if you are heading that way.

This is heavy industry country, so expect trucks on the R59 and around the works at shift change. Roads are generally in reasonable condition but secondary routes near the industrial areas take a beating.

Parking in both towns is easy and mostly free, including at the shopping centres and along the river resorts.

Parys and the Vredefort Dome area just across the Free State border are the most common weekend outing from here.

A hatchback or sedan covers the towns, the river and the run to Johannesburg. Everything is tarred.

Bakkies are in genuine local demand because of the industrial base and because people move boats and equipment to the river. Two cautions: towing is not permitted on a hire vehicle by default and must be arranged in advance, and a tow bar is not standard on rental bakkies.

If you are heading to a river resort down a gravel access track, check the unsurfaced road clause in your agreement first, as several of the Vaal and Parys access roads are not tarred.
