Car hire in Rustenburg

Rustenburg has a local rental presence serving mining contractors, business travel and replacement hire, with weekday focused hours.

Most visitors heading to Sun City or Pilanesberg collect at Lanseria or OR Tambo instead. Lanseria is the closer of the two at about an hour and a half, and it is quicker to exit.

There is also an airport at Pilanesberg serving the resort complex, which some visitors use directly.

Book ahead around big events at the resorts and during mine shutdown periods, both of which absorb local supply quickly.

Coverage for the other brands on this site varies in the North West. Check availability for your dates rather than assuming a branch, and treat Lanseria or OR Tambo as the fallback for a wider choice.

Rustenburg is a modest market where weekday business demand and weekend resort demand pull in different directions.

These figures come from Discover Cars and Cheapflights. Most are national, not Rustenburg quotes. A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. Discover Cars puts December at about R474 a day against about R387 in September, so holiday dates cost more.

If you are heading to Sun City or Pilanesberg for a weekend, compare a Lanseria collection against a local one. The drive is about an hour and a half and the airport fleet is much deeper.

The N4 runs east to Pretoria and west towards Botswana and it is tolled, so keep a card or cash for the plazas. This is a heavy corridor, with mining traffic on the local roads and freight on the N4, and overtaking needs a long clear view.

The R565 north towards Sun City and Pilanesberg is tarred and in reasonable condition.

Other notes:

• Mining haul and access roads are rough, and potholes on secondary roads are common after rain.
• Livestock on rural roads and pedestrians near settlements are normal, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Inside Pilanesberg, the main roads are tarred and the loops are graded gravel, so an ordinary car copes, though a higher seating position helps for game viewing.

Parking in town and at the shopping centres is easy and mostly free, with car guards at the busier spots.

Sun City and Pilanesberg are the reason most visitors hire here, and both are comfortable day trips from town.

A sedan or hatchback handles the N4, the town and the tarred road to Sun City.

Inside Pilanesberg, an ordinary car is fine on the tarred roads and graded loops. An SUV or bakkie gives you better visibility over the bush, which is the real argument for the upgrade.

Bakkies are also the local workhorse for mining contractors, and they book out during shutdown periods.

As everywhere, check your rental agreement's unsurfaced road clause before going onto gravel, since mine access roads and some lodge approaches are exactly the sort of ground where damage is excluded.
