Car hire at Lanseria International suits anyone staying in the north or west of Johannesburg, because the terminal is small, collection is fast, and you are out on the road within minutes rather than fighting your way through a large parkade, with Fourways about twenty minutes away and Sandton roughly thirty five.
The trade off is choice. Fewer brands operate at Lanseria than at OR Tambo, and the fleet on site is smaller, so booking ahead matters more here.

Why people choose Lanseria
Lanseria is a small terminal, and that is the whole point. Bags come off quickly, the rental counters are a short walk from arrivals, and you can be driving within fifteen minutes of landing on a good day.
It is also better placed than OR Tambo for a large part of Johannesburg. If you are staying in Fourways, Dainfern, Randburg, Roodepoort, Krugersdorp or heading to the Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort or Sun City, Lanseria saves you crossing the entire metro.
The limitation is that there is no Gautrain station here and no meaningful public transport, so a hire car or a pre booked transfer is effectively the only way out.

Driving out of Lanseria
The airport sits off the R512, which links south to Randburg and Roodepoort and north towards Hartbeespoort. The N14 and the N1 are both close, so getting onto the freeway network is quick.
Gauteng's urban e-toll gantries stopped billing in 2024, so the freeways here are not tolled. The N4 west towards Rustenburg does have conventional toll plazas, so keep a card or cash if you are heading to Sun City.
The roads immediately around the airport are quieter than the OR Tambo approaches, but they are also darker at night with fewer street lights. Take the main routes rather than shortcuts after dark, and keep valuables out of sight as you would anywhere in the metro.
