Car hire in Sandton

Sandton branches cluster around the Gautrain station, Sandton City and the surrounding office blocks. Several are within a short walk of the station, which is the whole appeal: take the train from OR Tambo, sleep, then collect the car when you actually need it.

This is a business district, so branch hours suit business travellers. Weekday cover is good, Saturday is shorter and Sunday is often closed. If you need a Sunday collection, an airport counter is the safer bet.

Rosebank, Fourways and Randburg branches are all within fifteen to twenty five minutes if Sandton itself is sold out for your dates.

Exact street positions move, and several brands run more than one Sandton point. Use the address on your booking confirmation rather than a general area name when you plan the walk from your hotel.

Sandton pricing tracks the wider Johannesburg market, which is the most competitive in the country.

These figures come from Discover Cars and Cheapflights. Most are national, not Sandton quotes. A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. Discover Cars puts December at about R474 a day against about R387 in September, so holiday dates cost more.

Two things push Sandton quotes up specifically. Premium and executive groups are in constant business demand here, and long weekends in the conference calendar tighten supply. Book premium groups well ahead rather than on the day.

Sandton traffic is the main consideration. Rivonia Road, Katherine Street, William Nicol and the M1 on ramps are slow in both peaks, roughly 06:30 to 09:00 and 15:30 to 18:30. A trip that takes fifteen minutes at midday can take three times that at five in the afternoon.

Parking is plentiful but paid. Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square and the office parks all have large parkades with boom access, and most hotels charge separately for guest parking, so check that when you book the room rather than at checkout.

Security habits are the same as everywhere in Johannesburg: valuables out of sight, doors locked in slow traffic, and treat intersections as four way stops when load shedding takes the lights out. Sandton is well patrolled but the off ramps around it are ordinary city roads.

The Gautrain is often faster than driving between Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand, Pretoria and OR Tambo during the peaks, so it is worth keeping in mind even when you have a car.

A sedan or hatchback is right for Sandton. Parking bays in the parkades are a normal size, the roads are good and nothing about business travel here needs a larger vehicle.

Premium hire is genuinely popular in Sandton for client meetings and events, and the local fleets carry it. Expect a higher deposit, a bigger excess and mileage caps on those groups, and check who is authorised to drive before you sign.

If your trip includes a bushveld weekend, the same advice applies here as anywhere in Gauteng: a hatchback gets you to the lodge gate on tar, but the last gravel stretch is where the rental agreement's unsurfaced road clause starts to matter.
