Minibus, Quantum and Hyundai H1 hire in South Africa

Pace also lists the Staria, Quantum and Coaster with Super Cover waivers. Its Quantum is listed at R1,745 a day and its Coaster at R2,460 a day. Those are one-day listings for Cape Town, so treat them as a guide, and note we leave out the Staria rate because it was shown as a Cape Town special.

One warning about the table. Group letters mean different vehicles at different companies. Avis Group O is the 14 seat bus in its van rental listing, and the 7 seat Suzuki Ertiga on its car fleet page. Do not compare group letters across companies. Compare seats, gearbox and the licence line instead.

The Hyundai H1 is a common search, but no operator page we read on 29 September 2026 names a Hyundai H1. They list the Hyundai Staria. The Citizen describes the Staria as compared with its H-1 predecessor, which is why fleets now list the Staria where customers still ask for the H1.

The Staria appears at Pace (Group E, 8 or 9 seats) and in Avis Group N and First Car Rental Group QA. At First Car Rental, the Staria is the largest share of the QA group at 28%, alongside the Fiat Ulysse, VW Kombi, Opel Zafira Life and Ford Tourneo Custom. A group is "or similar", so you may not get a Staria.

Some aggregator listings say other operators offer an H1. We could not confirm that on the operators' own sites. If you need the H1 or a specific model, ask the operator to confirm it in writing.

A Quantum is not always a 14 seater. Pace lists a 14 seater. First Car Rental lists a 10 seater. Thrifty and Hertz list an 11 passenger Quantum. Ask for the seat count, not the model name.

A Kombi is the smaller VW van. Avis lists the VW T7 and T6 Kombi in Group N (8 seats), Thrifty lists the VW Kombi in Group N1 (8 passengers), and First Car Rental has a Kombi among its 8 seaters.

On "bus hire": Pace rents the self-drive Toyota Coaster, a 22 or 23 seater. If you want a coach with a driver, Avis Chauffeur Driven Services offers a Toyota Quantum 2.8 SLWB (7 passengers) and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 516 CDI with a driver. We did not research coach operators.

We could not find one answer to the licence code for a 14 seater. Here are the positions.

The official rule is based on weight. The South African Government says Code B covers a minibus or bus with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) not exceeding 3,500 kg, and Code C1 covers a GVM between 3,500 kg and 16,000 kg.

A dealer listing points to C1 for a 14 seat Quantum. One Toyota dealer listing shows the Quantum 2.8 GL 14 seat with a gross weight of 3,810 kg and a kerb weight of 2,655 kg. That gross weight is above the 3,500 kg limit for Code B. It is one listing for one model, not a statement about every hired Quantum.

Pace asks for C1 or Code 10. Pace's 14 seater page says a Quantum needs a Code C1/Code 10 licence and above with a PDP. Its minibus page says Code 10 and a valid South African PDP.

Avis lists Code B plus PrDP. Its van rental page gives "Code b + PrDP" for the Group O 14 seat bus. That conflicts with the weight rule above. We could not establish why: it could be older wording, a different model or a tare-based reading.

Because of this, do not assume your car licence is enough. Ask the operator which code it requires for the exact vehicle and get it in writing.

A professional driving permit is a separate document from your licence. The sources say the following.

• The Government says you need a PrDP to transport passengers for an income on a public road. It also lists a PrDP for a minibus weighing more than 3,500 kg or designed to carry 12 or more people, the driver included. You should be 21 or older to hold a PrDP for a passenger vehicle.
• Arrive Alive says a category P PrDP is needed if people are transported for reward, or if the vehicle is designed to carry 12 or more people including the driver.
• Pace and Avis both ask for a PDP or PrDP on their bus groups.

What we did not find is an official statement on whether a self-drive hirer carrying family or friends in a smaller vehicle, such as a 9 seater, needs one. Whether you need it can then depend on the hire company's own rule and on the seat count. Ask before you book, and ask before you collect, because a permit you do not have can end the rental at the counter.

Minibus rentals are stricter than car rentals.

• Pace: requires a valid South African ID, a Code 10 licence and a valid South African PDP, and the rental is strictly credit card only. The booking form fixes the renter age at 23+. Because the page lists a South African ID, visitors on foreign documents should ask Pace before booking.
• Comet (Cape Town): minibus rentals are credit card only.
• Avis Group N: minimum age 18 and two payment cards required.
• Kenings: standard cover in most rates, but ask for the excess figure for the vehicle.

1. Ask for seats, not the model. A Quantum can be 10, 11 or 14 seats depending on the operator.
2. Ask for the licence code in writing for the exact vehicle, and say whether the driver will also need a PrDP.
3. Check every driver. Ask what the operator requires of additional drivers.
4. Confirm the payment method. Credit card only at Pace and Comet, and two cards for Avis Group N.
5. Check kilometres. Pace includes 200 km a day, so check that it suits your route.
6. Check the speed cap. Comet caps its Quantum 10 and 14 seaters at 100 km/h.
