Car hire in Benoni

There are branches around Benoni, Boksburg and the surrounding suburbs, and they work well for local hires, insurance replacements and moving vehicles.

For almost everyone else, OR Tambo is the answer. Every major brand operates there, the vehicle choice is the widest in South Africa, and the airport is close enough that collecting there costs you very little time.

Branch hours on the East Rand are weekday focused with limited weekend cover, whereas the airport counters run much longer hours. That alone often decides it.

Every other brand on this site is reachable at OR Tambo, fifteen to twenty five minutes away. Rather than assume a suburban branch exists, check availability for your dates and treat the airport as the default.

East Rand quotes usually mirror the Johannesburg market, which is the most competitive in the country.

These figures come from Discover Cars and Cheapflights. Most are national, not Benoni quotes. A "from" price is the cheapest car found on the day; an average includes bigger cars and longer rentals, which is why the two sites differ so much. Discover Cars puts December at about R474 a day against about R387 in September, so holiday dates cost more.

Because OR Tambo is so close, it is worth pricing both. Airport rates carry a concession fee but the competition there frequently more than offsets it.

The R21, N12 and R24 all pass through or near the area, so getting to the airport, Johannesburg or Pretoria is quick outside peak hours.

Gauteng's urban e-toll gantries stopped billing in 2024, so these freeways are not tolled. The N4 east and the N3 south still have conventional toll plazas once you leave the metro.

Security habits are the same as anywhere in Johannesburg: valuables out of sight, doors locked in slow traffic, use guarded parking, and treat unlit intersections during load shedding as four way stops.

Parking is easy and mostly free at the malls and shopping centres, including East Rand Mall and the Lakeside area. Informal car guards work most open parking areas.

The East Rand is the natural launch point for an N4 trip east, since you start on the right side of the metro.

A hatchback or sedan is right for local driving and for any Gauteng trip.

Bakkies are in steady demand on the East Rand for moving goods, which is one of the more common local reasons to hire. Remember that towing is not permitted by default and needs prior arrangement.

If you are heading out to a bushveld lodge in Mpumalanga or Limpopo, the tarred routes get you almost all the way, and the gravel last stretch is where your agreement's unsurfaced road clause becomes relevant. Ask before you drive.
