Enterprise Rent-A-Car in South Africa

Enterprise Holdings announced its South African expansion on 12 October 2022. The franchise partner is the Woodford Group, a privately held South African company founded in 1991 that describes itself as the largest independent car rental company in the country. The footer of enterprise.co.za reads "© 2026 Woodford Group".

In practice, Enterprise, National and Alamo are three badges on the same Woodford operation in South Africa. If you already know Woodford Car Hire, you know how the desks, fleet and rules work. Our Woodford page covers the group under its own name.

One small warning. Enterprise's help pages have some US wording left over, such as miles and a placeholder in the discounts answer, so treat those pages as lightly localised and lean on the Woodford terms when the two differ.

Checked on 29 September 2026 against Enterprise Rent-A-Car's official website. Numbers change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. A rental company will not ask you to pay a deposit into a new bank account by phone or WhatsApp; if anyone does, hang up and call the official number.

Countries Enterprise Rent-A-Car lists for cross-border travel: Botswana, eSwatini (Swaziland), Lesotho, Namibia (woodford.co.za).

Enterprise lists 15 branches on its South African site: 5 at airports and 10 in the suburbs and cities. Woodford's own booking site also lists a Witbank branch that enterprise.co.za does not show.

Airport desks at Cape Town, OR Tambo and King Shaka are open from 06:00 to 23:00 every day. Polokwane is open from 07:00 to 22:30 every day. Airport reservations are held for 24 hours if your flight is delayed, which helps on a late arrival.

If you land after the desk closes, arrange a city pick-up for the next morning instead of hoping the desk stays open.

Enterprise's own FAQ gives two answers. One page says anyone under 23 is disqualified, the preferred age is 25, and renters between 23 and 25 can rent at some locations for a young renter surcharge. Another page lists "to be 25 years old" as a requirement.

The Woodford terms, which govern Enterprise rentals, say the driver must be over 23 and have held a valid, unendorsed licence for the vehicle class for at least 3 years.

For a renter, the safe reading is this:

• If you are 25 or older, you should be fine on age.
• If you are 23 or 24, expect a young driver fee that depends on the branch. No rand amount is published.
• Young renters are usually limited to Mini, Mini Auto and SUV classes.
• If you have held your licence for under 3 years, ask before you book.

Foreign licences need a photo and must be valid. An International Driver's Permit is recommended if your licence is in another language using Latin letters, and required if the alphabet is not Latin based. A permit on its own is never accepted, and digital licences are refused.

Enterprise asks for a physical credit card in the renter's own name for the deposit. Virtual cards are refused. Cash is not accepted. African Bank and Capitec Bank credit cards are not accepted for luxury vehicles. South African renters go through a credit check.

Unusually for a multinational brand, Enterprise does take debit cards, but only on selected vehicle groups and with strings attached:

• Payment and a higher deposit are charged upfront.
• A 5% admin fee applies, capped at R1000.
• You use one card per rental, and the same card for booking and collection.
• Short rentals cannot be extended.
• The only extra driver allowed is a spouse or domestic partner.

The credit card deposit follows the vehicle group. The Woodford schedule that Enterprise links to shows R5,000 for mini and economy groups, R8,000 for the next step up, R10,000 for a Hilux, R15,000 for Fortuner-type vehicles and vans, R25,000 for BMW and Mercedes premium groups, and R50,000 for a BMW X5. On a debit card the entry groups need R10,000 from Monday to Thursday and R15,000 from Friday to Sunday.

Deposit refunds take about 5 to 10 business days to show on a debit card, depending on your bank. A credit card authorisation is released when you return the car. Extra drivers cost R400 excluding VAT per rental and must come to the counter with a valid licence.

Enterprise sells Damage Waiver, Personal Effects Coverage, Supplemental Liability Protection and Roadside Assistance Protection. The Woodford deposits and waivers schedule lists the excess and daily waiver rates by group, so check it for your group.

Cross-border. You need approval from Woodford through an online request form, and it can take days, so apply well ahead. The fee is R2,875 including VAT per country for Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho and Namibia. Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe are not permitted. Extra drivers are not allowed on cross-border rentals.

One-way. Possible between participating locations, usually with a one-off drop-off charge that varies by location and season and is shown at booking. Returning to an airport after collecting elsewhere can add a fee.

Mileage. Unlimited for most car classes. Large passenger vans, cargo vans and large SUVs have a limit and a per-kilometre charge above it.

Fuel. Enterprise's FAQ says to return the car at the level you collected it, or pay Enterprise's fuel rate, which is typically above the pump price. The Woodford terms say the car is delivered full. Treat "return it full" as the safe rule.

Late return. There is a 29-minute grace period on daily rentals. Up to 2.5 hours late is charged by the hour, and beyond that you pay a full extra day.

Other limits. Towing and hitches are not allowed. The Woodford terms also set speed penalties: R5000 for a second breach of 150 km/h and R10 000 plus vehicle recall for a third.

Enterprise suits renters who want a well-known name with airport desks in the big cities and Polokwane, and renters who need a debit card option. It also suits business travellers who want long-term or corporate hire from the same operator.

It is less convenient if you are 23 or 24, because the age rules are unclear and the class choice is narrow. It is also a poor fit for trips to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola, which are not allowed.

The loyalty scheme is Enterprise Plus, but joining and earning are handled on the US enterprise.com site. It is unclear whether a booking made on enterprise.co.za earns points, so ask before you count on it. There is also an Enterprise Rent-A-Car app for iOS and Android.
