Woodford car hire in South Africa

Woodford was established in 1991 and is a privately held South African group with about 16 branches. It describes itself as South Africa's largest independent car rental company and a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor. Under the Woodford name one operator stands behind every desk, so your booking, your deposit and your damage dispute all sit with the same company.

Enterprise Holdings announced in October 2022 that Woodford Group would run Enterprise, National and Alamo in South Africa under a franchise agreement. The enterprise.co.za website carries a Woodford Group copyright line, and the call centre number is the same one Woodford uses.

If you searched for Alamo car rental or Enterprise Rent-A-Car in South Africa, you end up with Woodford. The group runs all three brands from its own branches. Enterprise's South African site lists 15 branches, five at airports and ten in city neighbourhoods. Woodford's own booking site also lists a Witbank branch that the Enterprise site does not.

What this means for you:

• The terms that apply are Woodford's terms. Enterprise's help pages give two different minimum ages, 23 and 25, so go by Woodford's terms, which say 23 or older with a licence held for at least 3 years.
• Cross-border approval, debit-card rules and deposits come from Woodford, whichever badge is on the counter.
• Enterprise lists airport desk hours of 06:00 to 23:00 daily at Cape Town, OR Tambo and King Shaka, and 07:00 to 22:30 daily at Polokwane. Confirm before a late or early flight.
• Enterprise's site says Enterprise Plus points must be earned by booking through enterprise.com. It is unclear whether a booking made on enterprise.co.za earns points, so ask first if points matter to you.

For a rental abroad, Woodford's site handles overseas bookings through its Enterprise partnership. Read the terms for that booking separately, because they are not the South African terms.

Woodford splits its fleet into Mini, SUV, Family, Corporate, Luxury, Groups and Commercial, with bakkies and vans in the commercial group. Enterprise's site describes the Groups category as 6 to 8 people with 3 to 6 bags, and also lists VIP Luxury.

You book a group, not a model. The listed car is an example of the group, and the branch gives you whatever is available in that group on the day. If you need a specific body shape for a real reason, like a boot that swallows two large cases, say so on the booking and confirm it by phone with the collecting branch.

Two things to know before you pick a class. Most classes come with unlimited mileage, but where a class has a daily free-km allowance it is pooled across the rental, with a per-km charge beyond it. Luxury bookings are subject to an affordability assessment at collection, and if you fail it you are offered a lower class.

Woodford takes debit cards on selected groups, which is worth knowing if you do not have a credit card. The catch is that debit cards work only up to and including group IFAR, so a bigger car needs a credit card. On a debit card the rental and the deposit are charged upfront in one payment, you pay a 5% admin fee on the daily rental value (capped at R1000), and you must pass a credit check with a minimum score of 550. Each debit card can be used for one rental, and a debit-card rental cannot be extended.

On a credit card the hold is an authorisation on top of the estimated rental. Woodford says the average hold, excluding the rental, is R5000 and varies by vehicle class. It is released 3 days after the car comes back, but your bank can take up to 10 working days to free it. If damage is reported, expect the hold to stay for at least 7 to 10 working days while the damage is costed. Plan your spending limit around that.

The age rule is the same for every group: 23 or older, with a valid, unendorsed licence held for at least 3 years. Under-23s are turned away, and a driver under 23 also voids the waiver. International visitors need a foreign licence held for 2 years or more.

Cross-border travel is approved only for Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho and Namibia. Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe are not permitted. Apply online at least 3 business days before departure. The form lists a fee of R2,875 (incl VAT) per country, and you must carry the printed approval at the border. Approval is not guaranteed, and a denied request is refunded.

Woodford's terms also list Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia among places where cover does not apply. That sits oddly beside the approval process, so ask Woodford to confirm in writing that your cover applies in the country you are visiting.

For one-way trips, the booking form lets you choose a different drop-off branch from your pick-up branch. Woodford does not publish a one-way fee, so the price appears in your quote. Compare that quote with other operators before you book a long leg.

Woodford sits between the value brands and the multinationals. You get national coverage, airport desks and a full vehicle range. It has no loyalty programme of its own, and it offers a customer account and current offers instead.

If you want the widest airport footprint and a global loyalty scheme, look at Avis, Hertz or Europcar. If price is the only thing that matters and you can collect off-airport, the value operators will often undercut Woodford. Always price the same dates at three operators before booking.
